Sleep dentistry is a modern approach to dental care that uses safe, controlled sedation to help you feel calm and relaxed throughout the treatment. It’s especially beneficial for anyone with dental anxiety, sensitive teeth, a strong gag reflex, or those who require longer or more complicated dental procedures.

If this sounds familiar to you, then sleep dentistry may be a comfortable and reassuring solution. Read on to discover more about this form of dentistry, how it works, and its benefits.

What is Sleep Dentistry?

For many people, the very thought of sitting in a dental chair can trigger anxiety, stress, or even a strong fear that prevents them from seeking the care they need. Sleep dentistry uses sedative medications to make you feel calm, relaxed, and free from discomfort during dental treatment.

Unlike local anaesthetic alone, which only numbs the area being treated, this form of dentistry reduces awareness and anxiety so you can undergo care comfortably. Depending on the level of sedation, you may feel sleepy, deeply relaxed, or even drift off during the procedure while still being monitored by trained professionals.

By combining sedation with gentle, patient-focused care, sleep dentistry allows you to improve your oral health in a stress-free way and gain confidence in visiting the dentist.

We commonly recommend this form of dentistry for longer or complex dental procedures, such as wisdom tooth removal, dental implants, root canal therapy, and full mouth restorations. It’s also recommended for patients with high dental anxiety.

How Does Sleep Dentistry Work?

It starts with a thorough consultation, where we assess your medical history, your level of anxiety, and the type of dental procedures required. During this visit, your sedation options are explained, and a personalised treatment plan is created to guarantee your safety and comfort.

On the day of treatment, you will generally arrive with a support person, and your dentist or anaesthetist will administer your chosen form of sedation. These may include:

  • Oral sedation
  • IV sedation
  • General anaesthesia

Throughout the procedure, your breathing, blood pressure, and heart rate are continuously monitored by trained professionals. You will typically feel sleepy and relaxed, with little to no memory of the procedure. After treatment, you’ll wake up gradually in a recovery area while the sedation wears off.

Types of Sedation

Sleep dentistry offers different levels of sedation to suit your individual comfort, medical history, and treatment needs. The deepest level of sedation is achieved through IV sedation, the most commonly used method. It’s administered intravenously by a qualified sedation dentist or anaesthetist, allowing you to remain in a sleep-like state while still breathing on your own. Most people remember little or nothing about the procedure.

Other forms of sedation include nitrous oxide (happy gas), which provides light relaxation and wears off quickly, making it ideal for mild anxiety. Oral sedation involves taking medication before treatment to reduce nervousness, although it offers lighter effects compared to IV sedation.

General anaesthesia is the deepest form of sedation, used only in hospital settings for complex or lengthy dental procedures. Each method ensures comfort, but IV sedation strikes the best balance between control, safety, and patient comfort.

Is Sleep Dentistry Safe?

Sleep dentistry is performed under strict medical supervision, with your health closely monitored throughout the procedure, so it is considered safe. Before any sedation begins, we’ll assess your medical history and tailor the sedative dosage to your specific needs. During treatment, your oxygen levels, heart rate, and blood pressure are continuously tracked using advanced monitoring equipment to guarantee your complete safety.

Sedatives are only administered by qualified and licensed professionals, such as a dentist trained in sedation or an anaesthetist. In IV sedation specifically, reversal medications like Flumazenil can rapidly counteract sedative effects in extremely rare emergencies, providing an additional layer of safety and peace of mind.

“I had my first appointment with Cronulla Beach Dental today. I was extremely nervous but from the moment I walked in I felt completely at ease. The team were kind, understanding and took the time to explain everything which made the whole experience so much easier. I honestly couldn’t recommend them enough!” - Rachel Duthie

If you’ve been delaying treatment due to anxiety, this is a calm and safe solution.

Benefits of Sleep Dentistry

Sleep dentistry’s biggest advantage lies in its name. It makes dental treatment calm, comfortable, and stress-free. For many, fear and anxiety are what stop them from visiting the dentist. This form of dentistry uses safe sedation techniques to help you feel deeply relaxed, making it easier to complete procedures without worry and discomfort.

It’s especially helpful for longer, complex treatments, including:

  • Root canal
  • Wisdom tooth removal
  • Dental implants
  • Patients with sensitive teeth
  • People with a strong gag reflex
  • Past negative dental experiences
  • And more…

As one Cronulla Beach Dental patient shared:

“As a young adult terrified of the dentist, I am now an old adult happy to go for a check every 6 months… caring and gentle” - Ray & Dyanne Ward

Sleep dentistry helps you feel confident about your dental care again by removing fear from the equation.

Is Sleep Dentistry Right for You?

Sleep dentistry is an excellent option for people who avoid the dentist due to fear or discomfort. It’s particularly helpful if you suffer from dental anxiety or one of the other reasons mentioned earlier. It’s also beneficial if your issue requires multiple procedures that can be accomplished in one visit.

Also, children or adults with behavioural needs, such as ADHD or autism, will also find sedation beneficial to remain calm during treatment.
